Product development is an important part in the field of handicrafts, with trends in color and motives in the market providing guidance for a designer to create innovative new products that can be received well and bring benefits to the company.
Fortunately for Pekerti, we received a visit from a senior product development coordinator from Traidcraft, Hilary Anderson. For three days, 23 – 25 March, 2010, Ms. Anderson visited the Pekerti offices to conduct product development with Pekerti’s marketing team.
While in Jakarta, Ms. Anderson, with Pekerti’s marketing team, visited several places to find inspiration and ideas for product development. The national museum and a handicrafts sales center in Jakarta became the target of the visits. On this occasion she was willing to visit Pekerti’s warehouse to see how Pekerti’s warehouse staff conduct quality control.
Product development activities were performed in the Pekerti office with Pekerti’s designer, Priyo Ananto. Some sketches of products that comply with market tastes were successfully created.
“I am delighted with the visit of Ms. Anderson in Pekerti because we can share and learn a lot about the taste of the market in Europe,” Priyo said.
On this occasion, Ms. Anderson also performed quality control and gave feedback on product samples that had been ordered by Traidcraft. With this visit both sides hope that cooperation between these organizations can become better in future and with the development of products, more can be marketed in Europe through Traidcraft, and furthermore, that we can increasingly help the poor through handicraft trade.
